Sean Robinson’s アルゴンキン文様酒器 Algonquin Mon’yo Shuki

A sake cup by Canadian ceramic artist Sean Robinson, adorned with a design inspired by the Algonquin forest.

While the “Kin” in “Kintsugi” means “gold,” the repaired surface is not always finished with gold. In addition to gold, other finishes include silver and platinum powders, as well as colors created by mixing urushi with pigments. The most important aspect is achieving harmony with the piece itself.

For this cup, I used a black color created by mixing iron oxide with urushi. This finish exudes a smooth, almost wet texture and a profound depth of color. This color is called 漆黒 (shikkoku) and can be described as the deepest black, making it an exceptionally special shade. Interestingly, the use of this black urushi by Japanese artisans in piano finishing contributed to the global standardization of black as the iconic color for pianos.
