Chris Sora’s 達磨型酒器 Daruma-gata Shuki

Chris Sora is a third-generation Japanese-Canadian potter from St. Catharines. He learned the art of creating tea ware from a Urasenke tea master and crafts various vessels in traditional Japanese styles.

This sake cup has a highly unique “達磨 (daruma)” shape. A daruma is a traditional Japanese doll that symbolizes perseverance and good luck, with its rounded form designed to always return to an upright position when tipped over.

The practice of Kintsugi enhances our sense of self-efficacy by teaching us to face accidents, address them, and transform them into something even better. This daruma-shaped cup may well be the ultimate symbol of resilience and unyielding spirit.
