古伊万里 染付格子文猪口 Ko-Imari Sometsuke Koushi-mon Choko

Imari ware refers to ceramics produced in the area around Arita in Saga Prefecture, with “Ko-Imari” denoting antique pieces from this tradition. Starting in the mid-17th century, Imari ware was exported to Europe, where it became a major influence on the craftsmanship and designs of many European porcelain workshops. Domestically, it was also widely distributed, and this cup is one such example. Estimated to be around 250–300 years old, this cup features a simple 染付 (sometsuke, blue-and-white design) with 格子文 (Koushi-mon, grid pattern).
These cups are thought to have been used mainly by townspeople and samurai of more modest status (higher-ranking samurai would more often have drunk sake from urushi ware).
