Mino ware refers to a collective term for 15 types of ceramics produced in the southeastern region of Gifu Prefecture. Its origins date back to the 5th century when techniques were introduced from the Korean Peninsula. Over the centuries, many ceramics reflecting Japan’s tea culture were produced. From the late 17th century, everyday utilitarian pottery began to be made, and about 50 years ago, Mino ware became Japan’s largest producer of ceramics.
Many of the everyday ceramics imported to Canada are also Mino ware. While it’s likely that many siblings from the same kiln have scattered across the globe, this Kintsugi-repaired piece will stand out as a unique and special work of art, cherished for generations to come.
